George Markopoulos and Praedium Resist Affordable Housing Demands, Writes Crain's
Chicago real estate developer George Markopolous is in the news again, with accusations that he is displacing residents in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood.
Crain's Chicago reports that "As approved, the Praedium project, whose financing involves no public funding, according to Freher, would have five apartments whose monthly rents meet the city's standards for affordable housing, and the firm would donate the equivalent of the cost of five more units to an affordable-housing trust fund. One Northside is asking for six times as many units to be affordable."
Journalist Dennis Rodkin tried to reach George Markopoulos, but wrote that "Markopoulos did not respond to multiple requests for comment." As is often the case with real estate developers who are not getting support from local neighborhood groups, George Markopoulos did not answer Rodkin's calls regarding any plans for affordable housing.
Certainly, past allegations of impropriety and even fraud are likely another reason that George Markopoulos does not want to participate in a public discussion about his real estate development business, but that's really a question for George Markopoulos himself, isn't it? If only he would pick up the phone when reporters from Crain's and other media outlets call him.
